what amount of post do you need to go up a star does anyone have the list of how many you need? and what are they for?

The only thing stars does is showing how many posts someone has does.
No direct benefits from it.

At 100 posts you'll receive 3 stars, I believe at 500 posts you'll receive 4 stars and 1000 posts you'll receive 5 stars.

Nah I don't think people feel special when they have 4-5 stars. It's just that they may like to talk and they truly answer many questions that many of us are unwilling to answer for the new person here. So those you see with many posts have actually been very helpful into answering what people don't know or are confused about.
