View Full Version : Town or Fort

There seem to be a couple of options for getting a Wish Refugees community going in-game. The devs have suggested that you can build a guild town with permission from a GM so that all our houses could be close together and we would have room to expand. We would be able to chose whether to have this town in the safe land of the starting kingdom or whether to build it in the disputed areas (or possibly even in the neutral lands). The other alternative is to go for a fortress and then build the houses near that, allowing us to get involved with the larger politics of the world but of course increasing the risk of losing both houses and fortress. Anyone having any thoughts on houses, towns, forts and kingdoms, please post away :)

From reading everyone elses posts I get the feeling we are a mixed bunch who want to try our hand at everything (exploring, fighting, crafting, politics). We are not a regimented military organisation, so I think that rules out building too near the front where you constantly have to fight to defend your property. But we'd also want to get away from the densely populated starting kingdom where you have limited resources for too many people. Personally, I like the idea of the guild getting involved in politics (as in having our own Barony/County/etc), so how about we find a vacant Barony/County, perhaps build our houses in the Baronial/County town where they'd be safer, and claim or build enough fortresses in the area so we can elect our own Baron/Count/Duke. The houses would be safer in the town as fortresses could fall to the enemy more easily and more often. How far away we get from the safe zone depends on everyone's willingness to PvP and on how many neighbours we can count on to help us when 100 of the enemy drop in for tea, but I think we should be good for at least our own Barony to play with. Personally, I don't want to spend too much time PvPing, I'd much rather explore, craft, build, manage and only fight in defence of our and our allies' lands.
It may be a good idea to make a few allies so we can divide up territory between guilds without treading on each others toes but still be able to defend it in greater numbers through a network of allied city-states. Sorry, I'm getting carried away with the idea of Kingdom-bulding, perhaps people would just prefer to have the guild as friends to hang around and group with. Any thoughts?

How about we ally with these other Wish guilds of the light side and claim a large area, that way we can use some of the more warrior like guilds as a kind of human shield. If archers are good I can also Single handedly defend the fortress from attack as I am a very good shot in the fps games.
I am much in favour of attempting to use another area or guild as a human barrier to protect us but I myself will spend most of my time behind enemy lines.

If we asked a powerful warrior guild to act as a protective buffer we'd have to offer them tangible benefits in return for their protection. Allegiance? (maybe ok, depending on what our obligation to them would be). Gold? not so good. It may work if we offer them support troops when they go into enemy territory (voluntary) and reinforcements when they have to defend (obligatory).
But trying to guess where to set up base in a specific place in relation to the enemy is going to be impossible, at least for the first few months, as the front line will change dramatically from day to day until most of the land is settled or claimed. At the beginning we'll just see raiding parties attacking here there and everywhere. And it also depends on the whole concept of "formally declared war" and "warzones" which I don't quite get just yet.
Perhaps the best course of action would be to settle a large area together with two or three allied guilds (safety in numbers and all that) and agree to help each other in conquest and defence.
PS: Ramini, what did you mean you'll spend most of your time "behind enemy lines"? As in carrying out search and destroy missions or raiding parties?

Well I am planning to spend most of my time in DnL in the wilderness. Therefore I will probably spend most of my time running between enemy and a safe town. I intend to camp out in the woods ambushing enemies from the trees and setting traps if possible, others may join me at my mobile base but I intend to do a bit of Guerilla warfare :)
As for what can we give them.... Who said we give them anything or even tell them? I just mean we take over a fortress with another stronger guilds fortress between us and the enemy.

Hehe, sounds like a plan. I reckon if we get out there and land-grab early, later arrivals will build their forts between us and the enemy :)

I don't think it really matters if it will be fortress or town. As mixed as we are we just need some meeting place/starting point/headquarters. Whatever you want to call it.
Personaly I would prefer it to be in disputed area and have good relationship with neighbours, so that we can have good control over our area.
Further down the game, its kinda appealing to be actively involved in politics.
However I have some doubts as to how many people will be needed to effectively run and defend at least a barony. Not sure if we can handle that without direct alliance to some other guild(s).

Well once more depending on how many guild memebers we have by start (actively involved) should really determine our starting location,My character will be there to support in as many rolls as need be,and depending on any +'s or -'s to a Light location or a neutral location as a start point I would like to see our guild getting involved in a mixture of rolls from the start, and to do that we would have to IMHO be in a non-border start point. But if we have a large base and allied guilds the posibility of starting on a border area is intreging to me.As I as well intend to press the Light into the areas of Chaos

It's a difficult one - if we build our town too near the front, we'll always be re-building it as it gets trashed by the enemy but if we build it too far back,we'll either be spending all our time away from home or else have a long walk to the front lines. Perhaps one of the "rapid-transit systems" would allow us to have a nice relaxed town back near the starting kingdom but use dragons, balloons, etc. to get immediately to the front line for a bit of dark-bashing. That way the fort could be at either location depending whether we want to be defending it all the time or whether it's more important as a bargaining chip in our political ambitions. I see the forts near the starting kingdom as being important in the baronies because of their relative stability.
We're probably going to have to wait until launch (or stress testing if we're lucky enough to be involved) before we can know exactly how these details will work but I there is no harm in thinking these things over now.

Update: I have approached The Stars of Aesir (the other ex-Wish guild) about an alliance as we may as well start as we wish to go on. Obviously if Riders of the Wind starts up (and we don't merge) then that will be another probable ally for our political ambitions.

I think a fortress with houses near by is a good idea, and with 2 allies we should have no problem building on the front lines.. also one of my chars is going to be a dwarfe crafter, and I think I read something about others doing the same... so supplies should not be too big a problem.

Your 6 strong army will attack us? We have nothing to fear, all 23 of us  will barricade ourselves in our fortress and taunt you:
"You don't frighten us, pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottom, sons of a silly person. I blow my nose at you! I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Now, go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!"

Don't underestimate me :)
Who said it was 6 strong :-) thats just the core there will be at least 10 of us from the same college by the time this starts I would say and we are definitely active compared to some I havent seen around...
Also we will be recruiting, we are damn good at that.... in SWG you had to get 10 people for a city, I had 2 and put it down and logged off leaving about 4 hours to get 8 people :P
By myself I reckon I can take down 2 or 3 of you with my archery skills if its first person.
Now I come to think of it.... I don't think "Knights of Ni" has been taken as a name...

I was just thinking that.
On the plus side if your guild's not a fighting guild maybe you could beome DnL's first dancing guild and call yourself "The Knights Of The Round Table" ;)

Orcs and half-trolls: "hello there in the castle! we're hungry!"
us: "we've got some scones with whipped cream and strawberry jam"
Orcs and half-trolls: "No, we want to eat your brains...(whats that ScullKrusher?)...oh.. and your babies too!...err...please."
ScullKrusher: "awfully sorry"
us: "whisper, whisper, whisper...how about some butterfly cakes and a cup of tea?"
But seriously, I've been reading up on the fortress battles and it seems a mercenary could sign up with 50 different fortresses and be available as a defender for any of them if they are attacked by a teleporting army. If you are online you just accept the call and then you are teleported to the battle. A competent and reliable mercenary could command quite a high fee once he establishes a reputation. It could actually be quite a viable career.

My God there nearly wasn't enough plot twists. Where's the Fariy who looks like Julia Roberts? Where's the multiple story arc? Why am I being so anal about a film I didn't even think was that great? Why I am carrying on? why don't I just shut up? Why are my fingers still typing?

I don't intend paying anyone for protection! They can pay us if they want though :)
To form an effective defence we will simply need to conclude agreements with neighbouring fortresses that we will defend each other, that way we could cope with pretty large sieges solo. The cost being that we will have to defend others - but all in a good day's work, eh?
