Hey everyone :)
I've just got Guild Wars, and it's great. Anyway, I've started up a Light of Ganedan guild on there so if any of you guys play please give me your character name so I can invite you in.
For those of you who don't know what Guild Wars is, it's an MMORPG that you don't pay any monthly subscription for, just buy the game and away you go, and for something that's effectivly free it's really quite good!

I'm playing Eve-Online so I don't really have time for another game

Understandable, it's difficult splitting it between 2 games.

Arena pvp and questing with no unifying plotline doesn't appeal to me that much, there just doesn't seem to be that much of the "persistent" to GW. I was waiting for Roma Victor to come out, seems more like my sort of thing. But then again Guild Wars is only £17.99 from Amazon and I'm not playing anything else at the moment...

There is a plot to it, trust me, I've played a lot of MMORPGs (beta tested close to 40 alone) and GW has got enough plot to keep things going, there's plenty of quests if you don't want to PVP you don't have to :)
Just remember, on all the other games you have to pay, now correct me if I'm wrong but a game I have to pay £10~ per month for I'm going to be expecting something radical, and something that'll make me come back for more play each time, soemthing worth spending my £10 on. GW is different because it's no monthly fee, and for a game that's free monthly it's doing a really fantastic job. Look at games like FFXI, they're still charging a monthly fee and that completely sucks ass!
You could do so much worse than GW mate, and it's not all arena PvP, that's it's main feature yes, but there's a lot more on there than *just* PvP. You don't get access to PvP straight away anyway, it's only after you unlock it in a mission you get to do it.
Besides, what is DnL if not a massive PvP quest? Sure it'll have a lot of non PvP in it, but that's what I'm paying the money for (besides the seamless world, which is another big attraction to me).
My point is for £17 you will have a fantastic gaming experience, there's no lag and it's a one-off payment. If you don't like the game you don't have to play it, and equally you don't have to pay for it. Just give it a go, it'll be a good investment!

I don't mind the pvp and the questing though they are not the main thing I look for in a game. In fact MMORPGs are quite new to me I've always played strategy, world building, military tactics games and this is a bit of a seachange for me. The reason I've got such great hopes for DnL is that I can do all those things (city building, kingdom building, resource management, warfare) while enjoying questing with other people and fighting against other players.
I'd like to think that every quest in DnL has an impact on the ongoing world storyline (just like I hoped for in Wish). l want quests that'll impact on the world and other players who don't know me (and will never know me) and weren't involved in the quest, rather than a quest that will affect just me and my group. In other words, something that'll trigger local or world events and move the plot forward instead of a quest that'll just gain me another level or a Sword of Doom (which is why I've never been attracted to EQ2 or WOW). In fact I would love to see a game where players create complex quests for other players, like D&D, but all the plots intertwine with a central non-linear storyline.
And the same with pvp: I'll enjoy it if it has some sort of strategic gain or loss but not if it's just an end to itself. Instancing and arenas would be fine for a while but I would get bored very quickly.
BUT.. you've got a very convincing sales pitch (have you considered a change in career? :p ). ...it's only 17 squid for a bit of light entertaiment until DnL comes out..I'm 99% convinced

lol, well done, I knew you'd see the light :)
The whole PvP thing on Guild Wars is (as the name implies) to make your guild famous throughout the world, so you *can* sorta get fame and impact the world but in a very limited way.
GW also has 2 "modes of play" one RPG, one PvP, you can use your RPG characters to enter the PvP world, or you can soley RPG. I've just finished doing a massive quest and the story's not too bad either.
A little bit of advice, wait until at least lvl 4 before seeing Sir tydus about the Charr missions, you'll thank me later :)

P.S: For reference, in my last job I used to work for NatWest, selling loans, mortgages, car insurance etc so sorry for using my powers against you :P
EDIT: I forgot to add, you get to build your own Guild Hall too, so you can city build if you like ^^

You could always come and join the Gnome Crushers on the Maelstrom Server in Europe WoW. Fight for the horde! Stamp on gnomes!

Sorry Ramini but WoW just doesn't appeal to me at all. I don't like the graphics and when I checked out the forums it was like when you walk into a pub and then you turn round and walk straight back out again (although that was the American community not the European servers to be fair).
GW leaves me a bit cold as well playwise, but it's only a one off payment, so there's not much to lose.
What if you started GW too? that could be the last 1% to finally persuade me...(KC's got me selling GW on his behalf now!!). Anyone else?

Yeah, we should get as many people GWing as possible, that'd be cool, and like Sealgair said it's a one-off payment so you've got nothing to loose, and if you don't like it then you can always play it many months later and it may re-appeal to you and the worry won't be there that you've wasted money AND a subscription on it.
I will warn you now, the early quests are quite boring, but when you get onto the proper world map and start doing the Co-Op missions that's when it really pics up!

Yeah there are lots of idiots on wow. What are mainly called "cs:s fanboys" although I love cs:s myself and am not an idiot (no comments please)
We have the same percentage of idiots as other online games but since there are far more people and the idiots always draw attention to themselves it gives us a bad name.
As for the graphics, nothing spectacular but then again its better than alot of things I have played

It's not so much the quality of the graphics it's more the style that puts me off. Like McBraindead I was waiting for Roma Victor too, and their graphics are a lot less polished than the big name games but I don't care so much about the graphics when the content's good.

Right now I am playing a completely random game called Carnage Blender (http://www.carnageblender.com) and a game called bow master (don't recall the web address now. WoW is nice though, honour system just came out, with a lot of ganking happening now people realise that large raids dont actually net you much honour so its much more restrained now.

Hmm, might be worth having a look at that too then. I turned away from WoW because of the idiot factor involved in it, but as with all games it takes time for the hysteria to die down, the patches and improvements to come in and the idiots to leave =)

ya... there are too many retards in cs.. I wish I could make their computers explode at will in a giant ball of fire, shooting superheated bits of plastic and metal into their bodies at high speeds while they slowly burn to death screaming "wtf you faggot!!, thats bullshit you haxor!".
but thats just me.
ok,

That I'm gonna kick your ass, mwuahahahaha!!!
*ahem*
Make sure you get both your primary and secondary professions and all available skills for those professions BEFORE entering Ascalon Acadamy. Don't worry too much about armour and weapons as there's much better weapons after you exit n00bville and enter the academy =)

are you in europe or the us? is it possible for me to click the euro thingy and hope they dont realize my credit card and address are in the us? and are there seperate severs or do they ask for hidden corporate scary reasons?
KokiriChild
05-26-2005, 10:52 AM
Seperate servers per continent but with several unified "International Districts" that anyone from any country can meet on.
You can just download it and set yourself up under the US, it really won't make all that much difference =)

No, you can download it but you gotta pay for a serial key. The box just has nice art and manuals etc

Call me Mr. Thicko but I still don't get it. The box doesn't have cd's? if it has cd's why would you want to also download the game? but if you download it can you pay for a key online so you don'y have to buy the box? or is it just an update?
My head hurts now. And people keep trying to give me work to do. Jeez.
KokiriChild
05-26-2005, 02:26 PM
Ok Mr Thicko, here goes!
The box set contains 2 CD's, 2 manuals, a quick start guide and a CD-Key
The download contains the program and the CD-Key
The download is only 70k, but then it has to apply all the updates etc and when you go into a new area it downloads that zone to your hard-drive, the CD's in the box-set simple pre-install all maps so you don't have to wait whilst downloading the maps at the start of each new zone =)
Hope that helps!

GW is primarily pvp.. and i am not playing any more open pvp centric games.. I play one now..a nd i despise it.. if it weren't for the fact i worked hard on mining for my 2nd level home, my guild and my husband... i'd have quitted it long ago..
although, i have considered trying SWG
KokiriChild
06-06-2005, 08:40 AM
Hmm, GW being primarily PvP yeah, but it's only in arena's, and each major town contains an arena, and the only way you get to the towns is through the role-playing side of it, and believe me, it's vast.
It's also not like many other games, where you can be wandering around and someone can just come up to you and start attacking you - it's only in the arena's that you have to fight and then you don't actually have to go into the arenas. Actualy I lie, you *have* to go into 1 arena, but it makes no difference if you win or loose and it's on the training mission which simply gets you used to the PvP side of the game.
Although I agree that there is a lot of PvP in Guild Wars (hence the name), you don't actually have to do any bit of PvP to enjoy the game atall.

Just my take on guild wars, This is strickley my opinion.
ITs a waste of time. The PvP system is good (not the best or worse) The instanced zones, Kill the game. The tried too hard on the game. Combat is well done tho. I just cant stand waiting to get a group together then failing the missions because someone left or the AI on the 'Henchmen' is configurd to make them run into posion at every turn.... With that said i played it for a little while and it serverd is purpose, thank god i didnt have to pay a monthley fee for it.

It's true that GW is very limited but I've had some 10 fun hours levelling up and following the storyline, and I can see that I can probably get another 20-40 hrs before I get bored of that (I'm playing veeery slowly, just exploring and admiring the scenery). Which is not bad for the £17 ($25) I paid for it.
It's very linear and it's all instancing but it's fun to jump into a game that you can play from 10 minutes to however long you want. You don't have to wait for a party or feel bad if you drop out of the party because of RL issues, as you can hire NPC henchmen instead (maybe for some harder quests later on you will need other players). Playing solo like I've been doing is like playing a single player RPG, but the difference is that the option of playing with other people is always available and opens other avenues when I get bored of soloing. (although I think I would only team up with people I know rather than random groups)
The graphics are very nice and there's an enormous amount of PvE that you can do before getting to the PvP endgame, and if you like PvP then that's another 10-x hours before you get bored of that.
Good value for money I would say (if you can get it cheap). But it may not be for you if you are looking to level up as quickly as possible and be very competitive in the PvP, because you'll only get annoyed with the AI henchmen or useless noobs (like me :D ) in your random party.
Oh, KC I'm past the academy and my toon is Sior Blackadder
