Polaris BrightBlade--the star in the north--stood on the battlements facing west; as the last rays of molten sunlight glimmered across the horizon, a soft misting rain started to fall causing a spectrum of color to display itself to her keen eyes. Soon the twin moons would be out, both full tonight as does not happen but once in a great while. The night would prove most interesting, scouts had reported large numbers of Dark forces in the area. This keep was the lynchpin of the whole Light border in the north. Should it fall, the peaceful villages and windswept fields that lay behind them would perish beneath the heel of the Dark. Polaris suspected that she took her last breath of fresh air for the night as she placed her helmet on top of her pale golden locks and gently pointed ears. She turned slightly at the sound of footsteps.
"Gates are locked, and the watch is doubled as ordered." Korry, a brave, moved to stare off into the distance with his commander.
"Good, I fear it will be a long night."
"Agreed." Korry let a noisy breath rattle through his teeth as he leaned on the wall. A commotion down the stairwell brought both their heads snapping around towards the disturbence. A ragged human staggered up the stairs and fell to one knee infront of Polaris. His cloak was torn and there was a jagged rent in his leather shirt. He displayed a badge that made him a protector of the wild--a ranger.
"Dark forces are closing in around Granger's keep to the south. He requests whatever aid you can give him." Polaris sighed, a hard choice. Either she could let Granger fend for himself or split her own forces--making her own position weaker.
"Korry, I want all the reserve troops readied, we will go to Granger's aid, but the doubled watch remains here."
"Yes sir." Korry spun neatly on one heel and jogged down the stairs. The rain chose that moment to start coming down harder. Polaris turned her attention back towards the landscape.
"Dismissed ranger, thanks for your help. The kitchens downstairs can cook something up for you if you want anything."
"There's one more thing." Polaris turned her head with an eyebrow raised just in time to see the glint of a small blade in a sudden flash of lightning. She desperately dodged to one side, but the blade had already been in motion, and caught her in the side--punching through her chain hauberk. A gasp escaped her lips as she felt it slide in between her ribs. "Light will never triumph over Dark" the human hissed in her ear as she slid to her knees. As he moved around behind her for the finishing strike, she snaked a leg around his and jerked--tripping him. Before he could gain any purchase on the ground or his dropped knife, she threw herself back, landing squarely on the human. The wind went whooshing out of his lungs as woman and armor came crashing down on his chest. She brought her elbow back into his side, hard, and heard ribs crack. Then she spun on top of him and grabbed the knife from its resting place nearby--ending up with the sharp point of it to the man's throat. However, before she could do anything else, he forced himself upon the point--slitting his own throat while laughing to himself. "You are already dead." Were the words that were barely intelligible as he expelled his last breath. Her side burned like fire and she looked to the weapons edge. It was coated with a sickly green substance.

To be continued, let me know what you think.
