There once existed a conclave of both men, elves and dwarfes. This was long ago when the moon was still one and the magic in the world was strong and powerful. They were united in their search for wisdom and in their effort to keep the forces in the world balanced. It was called “The Order of the sacred Lunar Circle”. The were not interested in power or ruling over others, instead they acted as guides and guardians of the world. But a archmage of the humans foresaw the breaking of the moon. Not even the combined wisdom and strength of the conclave could prevent this from happening.

When the moon split in two the magic in the world began to weaken, and corruption found its way even to the high council of the lunar circle. Some humans began to scheme for power but their archmage knew that if they wanted complete domination the power of the conclave had to be broken and as the magic in the world grew weaker the elves became more vulnerable. The dwarfes, who never wished power for its own use, had already withdrawn from the circle leaving only the elves as a possible threat to the humans desire for power.

During one fatal night the archmage sent 1000 men of his elite soldiers to my masters school. It it wasn´t for the fact that magic in the world was loosing power they would never have been able to penetrate my masters defenses and take us by surprise. The school was a place for wisdom and knowledge, the scholars who lived and worked there were unarmed. They were slaughtered in their beds and bent over their books. My master fought bravely and the blood of many humans covered the grounds and their screams filled the night sky. But in the end it was a battle that could not be won and my master, one of the oldest and wisest amongst elves, was put to eternal death by the hands of humans and his body burned.

Before leaving they set the school on fire, burning the work and legacy of my master so that none could continue his teachings. I was badly wounded in the battle and beliving everyone was dead they left me inside the burning school. When I drifted back into conciousness I found myself inside a burning inferno. Making my way to the masters study I found his badly burned body and with strength fueled by love and hatred I retrived as much of the documents that was not destroyed in the fire and carried my master out into the cool darkness of night. Under only the light and guidance of stars I buried my master with my own hands, leaving the earthmother to heal his spirit and lead him to our ancestors.

After that night I wandered the land as a madman, my spirit was broken and my body weakened. I do not know how many years or decades that past before my spirit began to heal and I slowly regained my sanity. I made my home deep inside the forests, staying far away from both humans and elves. There I studied the documents that were not destroyed in the fire but most were incomplete and the essens was lost. It was obvious that I would need help to keep my masters legacy alive and continue his work.

I began to prepare for a journey, a quest to find allies to help me continue my masters work and aid me in avenging the crimes against our society. As I made my way through the forest I came across a lone wanderer, a human. He was a travelling bard heading to a nearby kingdom but seemed to have lost his way inside the deep forest. In return for news about the outside world I offered to help him find his destination. It seemed like much of the world had changed since I left. The breaking of the moon had eventually split the world in two, a dark and a light side, each struggling for supremecy over the other. I had felt this change in the magic and my magic had also changed over the years. But never had I suspected that it would have such an effect on the world.

I learned he was heading for one of the light kingdoms which was ruled by a very powerful and very old wizard, and as he spoke the name of that wizard the blood in my veins freezed. It was the former archmage that betrayed my master, the only remaining member of the lunar circle (except myself). I sensed that my reaction did not go unnoticed when he mentioned his name and answered him.

“You have been much helpful master Bard. It is time I fulfill my end of the bargain. As promised I will help you meet this… wizard, although I fear you will need to be patient before you can see him in the other world. But you have my word I will send him to you as soon as possible.”

As his eyes grew wide when my words became clear to him I sent a bolt of lightning through his body, killing him instantly. I relived him of his purse, since the dead no longer has any need of material possessions and continued my journey. I set out for the dark realms. It was clear that the light could not help and that it could not be trusted. If I were to find any allies they would be found in the darkness.
And so my quest began…

To be continued…

The forest glade

I made my way through the forest. The sun was still high in the sky but very little of the light made it through the thick foliage. The forest was old and had little patience for intruders who disturbed its peaceful slumber, I could sense the trees whispering around me.

I walked steadily without resting, carrying my staff and wearing a dark cloak, shielding me from the eyes of the forest. For three days I had walked through the forest, resting only for a few hours sleep and to eat some bread. My feet were starting to ache and I had not slept in a bed for more nights than I wished to remember. During this time I had encountered almost no living creatures, only small birds who lived high up in the trees and little chipmunks that sneaked across the ground and jumping from tree to tree.

Suddenly I sensed a whispering from the trees around me, I was not alone. A party had recently made its way through this part of the forest. Two or more people had walked past here not long ago, the trees were still aware of their passing.

My curiosity awakened I increased my stride to see if I could catch up the party. After a while the forest ahead of me cleared and I could see a glade opening up. I could already sense the presence of someone ahead and quickly conjured a spell to remain unseen and slowly approached the opening. I stopped near the edge of the trees and examined the surrounding area. Inside the glade was a small meadow surrounding a clear blue pond. Near the pond I could see four persons sitting together, resting in the remaining sunlight of the afternoon. One of the creatures was obviously preparing some sort of meal and was trying to start a small fire while the other three were engaging in a conversation. I could not make out what they were saying and did not dare stepping out of the forest to move closer. Instead I studied them from afar and tried to form an oppinion wether to reveal myself or continue unnoticed.

Two of them were clearly elves, tall and beautiful as all of our kin are, and both were emanating strong magic, which explained why their presence had been so easily detected. One of them, standing with his back towards me, was a little shorter and carrying a bow over his back and several other sharp objects attached to various parts of his body. He looked human and yet his body language and certain aspects of his face still seemed a bit “elvish”. Perhaps he was one of both elves and humans, a most unlikely combination, why anyone of elven blood could give their love to a mere mortal is a complete mystery. The one making a fire looked like a human that somehow must have been born even uglier than most other humans, he was hunched down on all four trying to fuel a small fire. Then I noticed a fifth member of the party, a small female-looking thing with wings, most certainly a fairy of some kind. Her wings glittered in the sun as she flew up from the grass and joined the two elves and the half-elf in their conversation.

Suddenly one of the elves stopped talking in midsentence and looked up in my direction. The shock of someone actually sensing me like that paralyzed me for the split of a second. I dropped the hood of my cloak and released the spell surrounding me and stepped out into the glade.

A strange encounter

“Greetings master Elf! There has been a long time since anyone could sense my presence without my approval.”

As I uttered the first word the half-elf drew his bow and turned around in one fluid motion with an arrow ready to fly.

“And I see there is enough elven blood in your friend here to move as fast as the wind, most impressing.”

“Remain still or you shall see just how fast the wind can carry my arrow straight into your heart! State your name and purpose with this encounter!”

The one who had felt my presence laid a hand on the half-elfs shoulder and whispered something in his ear. He lowered his bow but did not release the arrow from the string.

“Do not be afraid. But as my friend here said, please reveal to us your name and the nature of your business in these woods.”

He spoke softly and without anger but it was clear that this was a question that demanded an answer. I could sense the magic in the air converging around him, he was preparing to act if denied or provoked.

“I was not aware I needed permission to travel through these woods! I am simply a wanderer passing through this land on my journey towards the dark realms, and my name is Denieru. Now, if you could be so kind as to return the favour you could introduce yourselves and perhaps tell me where your travels lead you?”

The other elf who had remained still and silent until now stepped forward and said.

“My name is Bluenose, and we too are heading towards the dark realm. Come closer and let us not shout across this distance. The forest is already awakened and this glade is getting crowded, let us not invite others aswell.”

The half-elf still kept his hand around the string and said as I approached.

“I´m Shazi, and if I hear you as much as thinking about casting any type of spell you will find yourself bleeding from every vital organ in your body before one word leaves your mouth.”

The commanding elf walked forward and positioned himself between Shazi and myself.

“My name is Delta, and as my friend Shazi has already noticed there seems to be more to you than the description of a simple wanderer can explain. And this is Finora…”

The small fairy flied towards my face, stopping an inch from my nose. She appeared strangely attractive when viewed up close, almost elvish in her appearance. But the fairies is well known for their trickery and looks can be deceiving.

“Hello! Do you like flowers?”

I felt a small tingeling sensation as what seemed like a small, purple snake appeared behind my left ear. It looked surprised as it fell to the ground and decided to head for the pond.

“Ooops! Sorry, it was supposed to be a flower, this is all kinda new to me. Bye!”

She quickly flew back to Bluenose and hid inside his hood. The ugly human came forward from his fireplace and said.

“Hello, my name is Zilrion Hazardous, cook, mercenary and bodyguard. Not necessarily in that order. Why don´t you join us and try my new recipe, there is no fish in this little pond but there seemed to be plenty of frogs.”

When I had settled down with this strange company I suddenly remembered something from years past, something my master had told me many years ago about other elves in the world. This couldn´t be them, but their names seemed strangely familiar. But the thought of that two of the legendary four wizards would be traveling with such strange companions was enough to make anyone laugh. But if they indeed were the same, my quest for allies could prove to be over, it was worth the risk. If my intuitions proved to be wrong I had no choice but to wait until nightfall and kill them all in their sleep.

“Master Delta and master Bluenose, you wouldn´t happen to be familiar with the story of four elven wizards that once lived together. They were called the “Wizards of Fortune”.”

As soon as I had said the name both elves stopped eating and both stared at me and the expression in their eyes told me everything I needed to know. Before anyone of them could open their mouths I quickly raised my hand to silence them and said.

“Wait, I see now that it was the earthmother that guided my steps this day. I was meant to find you here and you were meant to find me. You must listen to what I am about to tell you for it is most important, I sense our destinys is linked together somehow. I will tell you of my past and then you can decide for yourselves if what I say is the truth…”

I told them about my master, how he told me about the four wizards. I told them about about the lunar circle and how my master was betrayed after the breaking of the moon. When I had finished talking about the events that had brought me to this place I asked of them their help in avenging my masters death and in return I would offer them my knowledge and wisdom that remained from the lunar circle.

Both Delta and Bluenose looked at eachother for awhile before Delta spoke.

“Your coming here is truly an act of little coincidence. It is clear that our paths was meant to cross and that we would continue our journey together towards our fate. We will accept your services and welcome you as a friend.”

And this is how I joined the Soldiers of Fortune and my real journey together with my new friends began…
