Hi I am Avignon and this is my story,

The story of my recent experience applying and getting accepted to the guild that is. Maybe my experience can answer some of the questions someone thinking of joining up might have.

I am not the guild leader or even a long term member, I'm new and only bring my experience so far as one looking, stepping and becoming a member of the guild.

~~~~ Whats the purpose of the guild?
This question frustrated me. As a number of guilds apparently thought existance was enough, or that more bureaucracy was needed in the world, some made me recoil at the list of rules and regs that had no apparent in-game reason, but some actually took the time to come up with some purpose that the guild would serve in DnL.
I wasn't looking to find people to go level up with. I wanted a others that are striving to accomplish something together. Something greater then they could accomplish alone.
While there is only so much that can be said of a guild for a game that doesn't even exist yet.. The purpose that attracted me to this guild was supplying the dark side with high quality gear at a profit so that members and myself become a power in the market and to eventually tip the scale of power in the dark sides favor.
~~~~ Whats the benefits?

Again without the game being out yet its hard to tell but there are many possibities given the focused purpose of the guild.

1] Being a member means we can pool resources to pay for things that we all benefit from. For example having access to high quality mines and teleports to the mines to save us run time. Together we can share defense of these mines and convoys so as to make crafting better items less risky.

2] Many factors are supposed to be taken into account changing the success rate of crafting
besides player skill. Things like weather, altitude, stars, and real life time. While you will always get something the stats will be degraded when crafting in the no optimal place and time. The trouble is knowing when and where and how to get there.

This is something that haveing contact to higher level crafters who know and plan out events to get us all there really helps everyone out. Members craft better goods then solo and the dark side gets better gear leading to conquest.

3] Legendary equipment although a long ways away requires all 5 levels of the same craft specilization to be together at the same time and in the right spot so as to craft the best gear in the game. Like player run epic events. Making the best stuff is not a solo profession and certainly not one that can be done without forsight and planning.

~~~~ Is this the offical guild forum? Website?
There is a very nice looking website over there
http://www.shadowthrone.tk/
but it seems a bit dated. The guild is at this time (Oct 05) moving from the black forums over there to the grey forums here.
http://www.netweary.com/shadowthrone/index.php
That one had me a bit confused.
~~~~ Application?

I have no idea what DnL will be like.

That troubled me a bit with guilds that have a strenuous screening process. Not that such a thing isn't important when a guild is a powerful force in the game but in this case there isn't even a game yet. No one really knows if DnL will be something they enjoy.

Application here is not so troubling.

In fact all I did was show some interest and sign up for the forums. That was enough to get the process going.

~~~~ What rank will I be?
I liked this about this guild compared to others that seemed more arbitrary. Your rank is tied to your advancment in the game. Not simply your individual progression but also how much you help other members progress.
Thoose that are helping not only themselves but also other members advance are given positions of authority. Though not the privlege to exploit the work of thoose under them.
This creates a balance. If you want to do the work of finding and leading some task that makes the members and yourself better off then you are given authority. On the other hand you may wish to simply play the game and benefit from the work the leaders are doing. In either case your stay with the guild will have put you into a better position then you would have been solo.
Rank isn't simply a tool to gain more profit for yourself it's an individual labor to make everyone in the guild better off so that through our individually growing powers and combined strength in the market and as a result all other facets we can reach a goal. The conquest of the light side.
~~~~ Questions

I can help somewhat with any questions you have and if I don't know can get you in contact with whomever does.

Also any suggestions to help answering the general question of "why would I want to join" along with your own thoughts on why you decided to join or not.

Brilliant! Now all we need is some people to actually ask questions! >.<
As for my reason for joining, I joined because I know how calming the life of a merchant can be, I also know how exciting and challenging it can get as well!
In my opinion the life of a merchant is the best there is!

Does being a crafter have to be solely about equiping the fighters of your guild because you are weak and need their protection?

Stop and think about this common offer that you as a crafter recieve from numerous guilds. You will provide us with awesome equipment that allows us to be self sufficent fighters and in return we will protect you because you are not awesome fighters like us.

Is it being a crafter or that guilds system of exploitation that makes you weak?

A leader looking to build a fighter guild would want you to think so. As it is fairly clear from his point of view what he needs from you and what he wants to give in return. The fight leader needs high stat gear if his guild is to be powerful through conquest and the thing that is cheapest to him is his ability to fight.

No wonder the leadership of so many guild try to convince some "crafter type" player to supply the required gear only to them for reduced prices simply because they belong to the guild.

Sure the crafters might want some sort of reward or something but its far less then actually paying for the gear off the open market.

In past games this sort arrangment might have been required but in DnL their are several features that allow crafters and all types of merchants to be self sufficent but not if you sign this freedom away by becoming one of thoose that are trapped in a guild structure that reduces you to a cog in their war machine.

Here at the ShadowThrone Merchants I found a group of crafters, traders, miners, and explorers that have a different agenda. They are not interested in you as a crafter simply because it makes them better. No, the ShadowThrone Merchants are about making merchants wealthy and powerful not just a few of the elite fighters in the guild. So that together as wealthy merchants we will be able turn the tide of the dark and light struggle.

Do not be one of them that surrendors time and effort convinced that loyalty to the guild is more important then your own power and wealth in the game. We are the producers. Not them. It is our wares that power their dreams.
