Grumrum

I awoke to the soothing echo of the early morning service in the castle chapel, I wondered how such a smooth sound could seem painful. Perhaps it was because it had been my alarm clock for the past few decades. Just a matter of the past now, there’s no use dwelling on it. The fact is, that castle of the “light” was becoming more of a prison than a safe-haven. When I came there, I was a tired faery, over-fought and over-used. My magic had proven its worth and the people were thankful. I had helped claim extensive amounts of land for the light, and even helped protect a few mana fountains, slaying anyone of the dark who came in my way, even the innocents. I was awarded for everything from bravery to butchery, I was treated as a hero. Now, don’t get me wrong, I readily accepted these in the beginning. How could anyone refuse noble stature and wealth beyond dreams? For the time, I was happy. For the time.
You see, the ways of the light, may seem true and just at first glance. But once inside the system, I realized what this, so called, society was built upon. Everywhere I turned I saw corruption, thievery, disease, and discrimination. Wealthy taking from the poor, and poor from the dead, it sickened me. Children dying of curable sickness while the tax collectors took their clothes and forced their mothers into prostitution. Yet all in the castle was well, the people were content. I couldn’t understand why, they saw the same things I saw, but they didn’t even comment on it. It was as thought they were in a trance. The fact is, they were, but not exactly what I had thought. I was thinking that some omni-potent sorcerer had charmed the inhabitants of the castle, allowing it to prosper while the people withered and died away, but it was far more deeply rooted than the power of men.
The societies of Dark and Light are very different, I hadn’t realized how different until one day. That morning when I awoke, I peered out my window only to see the army of the Dark standing in front of the castle gates. Not moving just sitting idly, waiting for something. I went to see the king, who was already holed up in his keep with soldiers armed to the teeth.
“How many are there your majesty?” I asked anxiously.
I could see the sweat on his forehead, his face was white as bone, he was terrified. Zraxious, one of the three generals at the castle greeted me and showed me the numbers, it seemed that the enemy had amassed an army of ten thousand soldiers, all fully armed. Added to this were various masters of the arcane and ballistics. The castle had enough defenses to hold a siege for a solid month, food and supplies were good as well. We had archers, mages, and others that could fight as valiantly as any men I have seen, it was my job to hold the door to the keep. The general then told me of the kings plan....
That selfish bastard, the things that he did cannot be described in words. He had locked and reinforced the gate to the castle, leaving the villagers outside stranded. He was holding the castle for himself, not for the people. I don’t know what happened, but my mind clicked, I realized that it wasn’t a spell put on these people, it was their hierarchy, the system of the light is dependent on greed, THEY are a sickness. A plague, set forth on this land we hold so dear.
I heard the horns, the dark army was attacking. I could feel the vibration in the floor, like a rumble from hell it came closer and closer, I felt the people dying, the innocents being slaughtered, and then I saw the king. Surrounded by men willing to die for him, he looked content, after all his people had died. He thought he could get out, that scum. He saw me, and it must have been the grin that had formed, I had realized what I must do. In that instant, I let go, the doors flung open and they rushed in. Staring at the king, He couldn’t help but scream “WHY?!” as he stabbed me, realizing what I had done. I turned around, seeing the shadow of an elf, and I saw all the members of the dark I had slain, all the innocents that I had burned, and all that came, was “sorry” as a fell to the floor, dead.
I woke, in the same bed, to the sounds of silence. Above me was the elf, and a number of others, all looking at me. I couldn’t understand why I was alive, I had killed their people, and I was of the light. Then I peered out the window again, expecting to see the corpses of my brethren, but what I saw shocked me, it was a celebration. The dark had welcomed the neutral villagers into their world, instead of killing them. The corruption, disease, and greed was gone. In that moment I saw the beauty of the Dark, they use their magic not for good or evil, but to prosper.
In this moment of bliss and rebirth, I heard the elf speak.
“I am Delta, we were told we would find you, now embrace your new self, for you are one of the Soldiers of Fortune” he said with a stern grin on his face.
I am Grumrum, Fairy wizard of the Dark, this is my story.
