The Legend of the Daemon King and Bandar

I walked out into the abyss, my humble abode, outraged at the diminishing of my minion’s power due to those damn gnomes. They had been pestering my underworld kingdom relentlessly for the last 2 moon cycles and I was growing tired of their endless energy. Hah! This would soon be over. They had not yet felt the wrath of my power and the caress of my blade. I had not yet confronted these puny gnomes, thinking my minion’s could take care of them. This was proved wrong, I had underestimated that race but they are no match for myself, the daemon overlord!

As I entered the cesspool of evil and hate that is my abyss, I leapt and spread my wings, crusted with the blood of the innocent. The rage built up inside me as I pondered upon how they could have penetrated my underworld. The mother-loving gnomes must have built a portal into the abyss. Damn them! The irony of their eternal wondering bringing the ruin upon their race gave me a rush of adrenaline but soon the rage overthrew my rational thoughts and all I could think about was maiming, burning and killing.

The gnomes came into sight and I was filled with an ecstatic feeling of power. I, the daemon overlord, would destroy a whole race. This would be the greatest achievement of my eternal life so far and the thought that none of my race would ever hear about it except in the afterlife threw me over the edge. My brothers had sadly been killed in the epic war against the Gods many years ago and I was yet to avenge them.

Although none of my daemon race would hear about it, the elite overlord group, the “Soldiers of Fortune” sure as hell would. This achievement would surely allow my access into the powerful group who led the dark side so well. To achieve membership into SoF, the applicant must display a power unique and extremely evil. The fate that I was about to bring down upon these puny gnomes was definitely a unique and extremely evil power.

Throwing those thoughts out of my head, I reached to my scabbard and pulled out the mighty sword I will now name “Mortal-Bane”. I imbued it with such evil unknown by gnomes, until now, and I leapt down upon them, bringing death with me. They fled from my evil, losing their mind from looking upon my horrifying visage. The leaders of the gnomes were a little smarter than that, but they soon knew my wrath as I swept my blade across their fragile, little bodies. I fed my hate from their pain induced screams.

Soon, the gnomes were reduced from thousands to one. The gnome king was the last, his name I had heard only in books of lore. He was not to be underestimated. His minions knew him by the name, Bandar, which means “WarMaster” in the old Gnomish transcript.

I bounded towards him, sword raised, and as I came within one or two metres, he looked into my eyes without fear. I hesitated, not knowing anyone before to face me without fear. He pulled out a dagger, shimmering with runes and various sigil, and thrust it in my torso. I struggled with the pain, knowing it only to be a flesh wound, but the magic held within the blade was my bane.

The pain I felt, had only been known in the darkest times inside the void. As I am immortal he could not kill me. As legends are told, the man or woman who slays the immortal must bear the eternal spirit of the immortal living within them.

Curses to the infernal void, I thought. I would suffer the rest of time in this puny gnome. Sure, I would corrupt him but it would take many, many years, as the heart of this gnome is pure. After I corrupt him, I will live on as King of gnomes which might be interesting….

- This excerpt was taken from the mysterious book of lore, “Legends of the Daemon King”. Rumour has it that the sword, “Mortal-Bane”, is still down in the abyss, waiting for the day when it would once again be used in the name of evil.

Many years later, Bandar was corrupted and led many campaigns in the name of evil. After years of evil doing, he joined the elite overlord group, “Soldiers of Fortune”, and his name still imbues people with fear, terror and doubt in themselves.

Great story, i liked the ending, how you carried the mythology forward and left a hint that there could be that sword out there, waiting to be reclaimed in the dnl world
