Serenity

It all began with a battle between a clan of wood elves and a small village of humans on the outskirts of Ganareth. The battle was fierce and many were killed or wounded. The chaos ended deep in the woods of the elves and bodies dotted the forest floor. But near a small creek there was movement. One of the wounded humans was inching his way toward the creek. He managed to lay right next to it, stretch out his hand, dip it in to the cool water, but before he could take a drink, he collapsed from exhaustion.

He was awoken by a soft touch on his forehead. He opened his eyes and saw a beautiful young elf with green eyes. Panic raced through him and he tried to reach for his sword but she quickly placed her other hand on his arm. All of his fear and anger passed away. “ I am here to help you human,” and at that he passed out again.

Weeks passed and the young elf nursed the human back to health. Soon enough a relationship between them was born, and so was a baby girl. Amongst their joy and happiness was fear. They knew they could never leave their home by the creek. Both of their kind would never understand their love.

A year passed and their tranquility was broken when a hunting party of elves discovered them. They surprised the young family and killed the young mother on the spot. The man quickly grabbed his daughter and ran toward his old home in the village. When he had returned to the village, he was questioned by the villagers about his disappearance and about the child. He explained that he was a prisoner of the elves along with other humans. One was a woman who had a child while in prison. The elves were going to kill her and the child. They killed the mother but before they could kill the child he saved her and ran away. The villagers accepted his story and raised her as a human. He named her Serenity for that was the feeling he had when he was with her mother. Growing up wasn’t easy for the half-elf. She looked and acted different than the other children. Adults and children started rumors and teased her. For his daughter’s well being he started training her in the ways of the warrior. She excelled in it but it wasn’t in her timid nature to be a fighter. Then puberty hit and her elfish features became more prominent. The villagers couldn’t allow an elf, even a half-elf, to live in their village. One night a mob came to their home screaming “Elf lover!” and “Bastard child!”
The man awoke in terror. He knew what they had planned for his beloved daughter. He shook her awake and helped her out of a window. “Father?”
“Quickly, Serenity, run to the woods. You will be safe. I love you, don’t forget that!”
She hesitated a moment then turned to start running. She only went two steps when she heard her father’s screams. She ran and ran, deeper and deeper into the woods. Her legs ached her and she had to stop. She slowed down and noticed a small creek. She studied it. It seemed very familiar to her. She bent down to take a drink when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to see a young female elf with green eyes smiling at her. She smiled back.

Years passed and the young elf taught Serenity the ways of the healer elves. She learned of the light and of love. She learned to let go of her hatred and forgive those who killed her father. “But what about your mother?”
“ I know nothing of my mother. Only that she was beautiful and kind. It pained my father to speak of her.”
She smiled. “ I knew her. She was a wood elf. A healer. She saved your father’s life, and yours.”
“What?”
“She died by the hands of her clan, because she loved a human and their child.”
“Please tell me more….”
“No, sweet one. I think you are ready to see the world. I have taught you all I know. Darkness is rising more and more each day in other parts of this world. Heal the world, Serenity. Go show them the Light.”
And then she slowly faded away. Serenity smiled and stood up. She gathered some food and some belongings into a bag. She then turned and looked toward the sun. She would follow it into the unknown.
