Well, here it is, the Legend of Cheese_Mouse. It's a little long, so sit back, grab some popcorn and a bucket of crispy dodo wings, and enjoy...

The Legend of Cheese_Mouse

-Beginnings-

My earliest memory is waking up in that dark, damp alley. A cold wind was blowing and I was alone. Being so very young, I had no place to go. I could see the light of the orphanage a little ways down, but I knew that I would not be accepted. Dark elves did not belong in orphanages. I walked down the cobblestone street and saw a vent to a sewer where warm steam was escaping. I huddled over the vent, covered in only my torn up clothes and an old blanket that was useless against the breeze. There was a chain on the grate, but the lock that once held it closed was broken. Slowly, I walked inside seeking more of the warmth I had felt on the surface.

Inside it was even darker than the alley, the only light was what moonlight came through vents to the street. Down the tunnel I walked, my blanket wrapped around me. I could feel the sludge of the sewer squish between my toes. As I went on, my eyes adjusted to the light in the sewer and I began to make out writings on the walls… “Bluenose wuz here”… “SoF RuLz”… Suddenly, something squirmed under my foot and made me slip and fall into the horrid ooze. I slid down the tunnel a little ways and could just see what was in front of me, a drop straight down into the depths of the sewers. Desperately trying to grab on to something, my hands found nothing but more of the vile sludge and down the hole I went.

I remember waking up in a pool of foul smelling liquid with strange substances floating on the top. Something was pulling at my collar, looking over my shoulder, I could see that I was headed for the side of the pool, but I could not see my rescuer. Again I blacked out and awoke safely on the stone edge of the pool. I looked up and wiped away the slime that stuck to my face. In front of me was some sort of strange creature, no taller than a stump and with long ears protruding horizontal out of his head. I would guess he was around age 70. He was crouched looking down on me. I sat up and looked at him, his cloths were as raggedy as mine and his skin was a pale greenish-gray. He had a strange staff in his hand, probably made from what he had scavenged from the sewers. On his shoulder perched a mangy looking rat, the end of it’s tail was missing and so were small clumps of fur from it’s coat.

“Who… are you?” I asked, afraid of the creature who’s revolting smell seemed to surround him like an aura.

“That question, I should be asking to you young one… yesssss…” He answered, the end of his words coming to a hiss.

“Well, I’m not sure who I am, I’m an orphan. I was abandoned.”

“Train you will I, train you I will… yesssss. Adoy my name is, but master you must now call me.”

“Actually…” I stuttered, “I’ll just be leaving now…”

“Leave you must not, or attack you my rats will…yessssssss…”

“Well, I guess I will be staying then.” I replied, and followed Adoy deep into the bowels of the sewer. Along the way he was humming a peppy wordless tune, which, by the end of our journey, became very annoying. Many times I was tempted to grab the old creature’s staff and whack him over the head, but whenever this thought came over me, the rat on his shoulder would turn to me as if saying “I dare you, bring it on! I’ll bite the **** out of you, you *** ***********! ”… So I held back, and on our journey went.

-Rodenta-

After a couple hours we had traveled about a mile through the sewers, each step taken by Adoy seemed to be shorter than the last, and he grunted with each step. I began to wonder if he would make it to wherever he was going and took a couple steps back to ensure that if the creature did die and fall backwards, it would not hit me.

Finally we reached our destination. It looked exactly like a town square, only underground. The buildings surrounding the open area in the center were crafted out of discarded planks of wood and stones. In the center of this small community was a hand crafted statue of a rat or mouse with it’s hand in the air, pointing to the surface. Where its hand was pointing, a grate to the surface lay, very high up into the ceiling. A pillar of light shown down onto the statue, giving it a holy appearance.

“In Rodenta, we are… yessssss…” said Adoy, opening up his arms to the dwellings. From the windows, little faces started to appear, each with its own set of whiskers.

“Is this town run by only rats and mice?” I asked Adoy.

“Run by them this town is, saved by them I was, as saved by them you have just been.” I thought about this and remembered how I felt the tugging on my collar but could not see what was saving me. “Saved you Lassie did, a good rescuer, Lassie is… yessssss...” When saying this he turned to the rat perched on his shoulder, who seemed to enjoy the praise.

“So what now?” I asked.

“Train you will I, train you I will. Repeat myself no longer will I, listen you will have to do… yessssss… To my training center you must follow me.” I followed him into one of the small openings of a dwelling.

Inside, the roof opened up into a long hall. As I followed him down the center, I saw rats and mice practicing what seemed to be some sort of martial arts. I stopped and watched as two very agile mice flew towards each other, kicking their feet. I felt a tug at my shirt as Adoy pulled me onward down the hall. At the end was a solid wall of stones, each with some sort of design. Adoy examined the wall carefully. After this brief stop, I began to realize how long it had been since I slept. I put my hand out against the wall to lean on. Slowly, the stone on which I was leaning sunk into the wall and I heard a creaking sound coming from the walls around me. Suddenly, I heard the whiz of arrows zip past my head, missing me by what must have been no more that a hair’s width. Adoy looked up at me with a smile on his face. “Not that one the key to the entrance is.”

Just as before, Adoy began examining the wall, making sure to avoid stones with the same marking as the one I had pressed. Finally, the decision was made and he pushed one of the many stones into the wall. A creaking sound occurred again, but this time it was followed by the sound of grinding stones. Dust fell from the wall as it opened up into a dark cavernous room with a podium facing a small fire lit in the center.

“The ways of the necromancer, you shall now learn. Teach you what I know, I will… yesssss…” At these words the fire blazed a bright green. “A name you must receive, honor the mice I shall. Cheese Mouse, you shall now be called”. The fire crackled and sparks flew from it. The green flame reflecting off the metal latches on the many leather bound books scattered across the room. “A great necromancer you shall become… yessssss…”

-Skills-

For years I trained under master Adoy, my skills closely rivaled the Master himself. My lean body had become a mass of sinew, rippling with each nondescript movement. Time had taken the lonely orphan from a whiney wimp to a statue even the gods would be jealous of.

“Trained you well have I, take the tests you must.” He hobbled over to a stack of books and took one of them. I stood, my head down in respect. Master Adoy set the book on the podium and began to read from it… “Naar nér tuulanna nillo!” The fire turned bright red and a figure began to take shape out of the flame. The fire golem stepped down from its hover above the fire and faced me. I studied it and then closed my eyes, concentrating…

“Ilfirin helce tampe naar!” I yelled. From the cavern walls water began to drip, faster and faster, gathering in front of me, crystallizing as it came. After a few moments, my summoned ice creature stood directly facing the fire golem. “Sìrë ullier nen kirrier!” I continued, and the ice creature threw its arms forward, dousing the fire golem with waves of water and ice. The golem hissed as steam rose from where it stood just moments before. “Hiise.” I said, and the ice creature vaporized.

Master Adoy nodded his head and continued… “Oromandin mahtor ilfirin taurë!” A forest-green portal opened where the golem once stood. Through the portal, a battle ready fairy came flying through, glowing sword in one hand and a dark blue sphere floating above the other. I examined the fairy and began casting…

“Ungol neuma inya ungwe!” in front of me, the ground began to crack. Pieces of earth broke away and a giant spider emerged. It was jet black and the fire glinted off it’s shining body, and a red hourglass was printed on its back. “Ungwe tampe tuielind wilwarin.” I said and it readied its web.

“Phir more ungol hurro!” Master Adoy shouted, and the fairy threw its sphere into the air. It shattered into bolts of lightning that rained down on the arachnid and I.

“Turma vaire!” I managed to yell, just in time. A shield appeared, deflecting the energy and ricocheting it out into the walls making the cavern rumble. “Gwath ungwe mak wilwarin!” The spider shot its web straight at the fairy, entangling it and locking it to the ground. With anger in her face, the fairy cut herself free from the web, her wings still entangled keeping her from the air.

“Oromandin tienwa!” Master Adoy commanded, and the fairy charged at her opponent, sword blazing. The sharp blade came down with a huge force, slicing off three of the spider’s eight legs. The spider shot a web straight up and flew to the roof of the cavern. The fairy could only wait.

“Neuma pinilya nisse!” I shouted, and the spider shot down a web, pinning the fairy’s sword to the wall. Another web followed that fully immobilized the tiny warrior. “Phir,” Master Adoy and I said together, and the two fighters faded away. Again, he nodded his head and continued.

He turned a couple of pages in his book… “Angew urolòkë maruvan nutalam!” the Master shouted… and the cavern rumbled. The battleground began to glow red and smoke. Cracks appeared and lava began to flow from them. The ground then fell away, into the cracks, until only a red pool of molten lava remained. Slowly, out of the pool rose a dragon. It’s scales red as the fires of hell. It pointed its nose to the roof and illuminated the cavern with the light of its flames.

I lowered my head, deep in thought and concentration… “What can combat a dragon?” I thought. I began casting… “Elvie sule tuluva, mak urolòkë ng’olwe!” From the walls of the cavern, dark figures appeared. Some human, elf, brave, monster, creatures of the past gathering together. They swirled together in the roof of the cavern, faster and faster, around in circles coming closer and closer together. Suddenly a flash of blinding light lit up the cavern. The light lowered, all the spirits were as one. The dragon blew flames into the light, but it had no effect on the dead. The light moved closer and closer to the dragon. The dragon lifted up its head to the roof and blew furious flames into the air. The spirits shot into the dragon’s nose and mouth and the light vanished. The glow of the spirits inside the dragon could be seen through its chest. Slowly, each scale was lit up with the same blinding light as before. The dragon roared out in pain and confusion as the last of the scales were lit. One flash of light and the dragon vanished. “Qeluva.” I said, and the spirits faded away.

-The Surface-

“Time for you to go, it is. Taught you well, have I.” Said Master Adoy, handing me a book of summons. “Take this with you, you must. Help you, it will.” I put on my cloak and took the book under my arm.

“Thank you Master, I’m sure it will help me through my quests, and thank you for...” Master Adoy held up his hand for silence.

“Learned well, you have. To the surface, you must go. Find your place in the world, you must.” He then turned away and hobbled back towards Rodenta. I turned towards the maze of sewers and began my way out.

On the surface, it was a cold, dark night, just as it had been all those years ago. A light rain began to fall and I wrapped my cloak tightly around me with my hood over my head, covering my face in shadow. I saw the light of a pub on the corner and walked towards it. By the time I reached it, I could hear thunder in the distance. I entered and sat down at an empty table.

“What’ll ya have?” A waitress asked.

“The strongest ale you posses.” I said, my head still under the dark black cloak. She returned with the ale and set it on my table.

“So, ah… wat’s with tha hood? You all creepy ‘n scaly under there?” I said nothing and began to sip my ale.

I set the drink down. “You call this ale? This is water.” This was no comparison to the sewer’s rat poison ale. Putting three fingers on each side of the tankard, I mumbled… “Yulda nyaro.” The tankard began to glow bright blue, illuminating the lower half of my face. Slowly, the color faded away.

“Wat was that?” The waitress asked, staring at the tankard. A small gray nose and set of whiskers appeared at the rim. I put my hand to it and the mouse hopped out into my hand. The waitress could only stare in amazement. “A necromancer…” she slowly backed away from the table and continued serving others, making sure to keep one eye on me. The mouse scurried up the front of my sleeve and sat on my shoulder.

I cupped my hand to the table. “Tyuru tuluva.” From between my fingers, an orange light shown. The mouse climbed down my sleeve to my hand. When the light faded, I removed my hand and a piece of cheese remained on the table. The mouse sat up and happily ate it. Others in the bar noticed my casting, and watched in curiosity. When the rodent was finished, it climbed back up onto my shoulder as I reached into my cloak and removed from my pocket two gold coins. Quietly, I set them on the table and left.

The town was asleep except for the pub. No candle was lit in any of the homes. The rain had stopped, at least for now. I walked down the street towards the borders of the city. Out of the shadows came a half-troll and two half-orc twins. “What ‘cha carryin’ there?” the half-troll asked in a rough, shrill voice. I stood, my book under my arm and mouse on my shoulder, and said nothing.

“And what’s that on yer shoulder?”

“Yeah, yer shoulder!” The twins demanded.

“Why don’t you show yer self? You afraid?” Questioned the half-troll.

“He ain’t talkin’ lets get ‘em!”

“Yeah, get ‘im!” The two half-orcs said. They grabbed their clubs from their belts.

“Now we can do this the easy way…” The half-troll unsheathed his dagger. “Or we can do this the hard way…” The three began walking towards me, weapons held ready.

I smiled from under my hood. The mouse on my shoulder showed its teeth. “Lasse harwe yat malle,” I said, and from the walls of the houses around us, vines began to grow. Slowly, they came inward to the street where the halflings stood. The three attackers looked around confused. The vines wrapped around their feet and began up their legs. They hacked and slashed at the vines, but were unable to break free. Slowly, the vines covered them completely. “Turme.” I said, and the vines retracted, leaving only two clubs and a dagger behind. I picked up the dagger and put it in my belt, “Might come in handy one day.” I thought. Once again, it started to rain.

I was not bothered for the rest of my journey to the gates. The other thieves had seen what had happened and kept their distance. At the gates, two human guards stood in my way. “Where are you going?” One of them asked.

“Out.” I responded. The guard who spoke shrugged his shoulders to his partner and they moved out of my pushing open the gates. Once I was outside, I heard the clang of the gates closing. I stopped to think of what I was leaving behind. Looking forward I could see almost nothing through the rain, which had gotten considerably stronger, but could just make out the start of a forest ahead. I continued toward the tree line, the unknown…

ok, so there you have it, the history of Cheese_Mouse. Don't just say it was "good" criticize me. If you're really bored, here's some info for 'ya... All of the spells are words in Quenya, a language figured out by people who were addicted to Lord of the Rings and had way too much time on their hands. Nothing to do? Well lucky you, you can see what's being said! http://www.learnelvish.com/ have fun! Oh, also, if you didn't notice, "Adoy" is "Yoda" spelled backward, kinda tried to base the character that way. Another thing, i didn't know weather to continue or not from here, if you all like it, i can write more, i don't think i'm good enough though, oh well. Good luck other jr's on your stories!
