This is a quick conversion from a book I was writing. Some parts may be a bit rough.

Neo – The Present
Nevin’s lungs burned as if they were on fire, but he ran on regardless, for he feared what was after him more greatly than any pain he could suffer. He had entered these accursed woods about an hour ago, he hadn’t really had time to consider why he was running through a murky wood, where there had been an open plain the day before. Trees emerged from the gloom as if they tried to slow him for the creature that chased him even now, and their branches lashed at him cutting into his flesh and it seemed, trying to trip him. He knew that which chased him, for he had had a hand in its creation, although that had taken place in another plane of existence, who knew it would be able to follow him through the planar boundaries. It had all started as a grand scheme, a group of Darkmages to find a candidate to mould into the perfect warrior for their cause, only something went wrong and something interrupted the process, he was the last one left, all the others had met rather gruesome ends at the hand of their creation.
He could hear the sound of shattering wood and the cry of wood as it was bent beyond its natural limits. The sounds grew louder as he ran; he knew his time was almost at hand. As if to accentuate this point he stumbled in a depression hidden in the mists that cloaked the ground. He tried to clamber back to his feet but it was already to late, he felt an stabbing pain in his lower back, he feebly tried to carry on but found himself pinned and realised his legs no longer answered his call.
It has always been said that a man always knew when his end was near, Nevin had always scoffed at these claims, but realised now it was true. For he knew he was finished before he felt the biting sensation in his neck, even though it only lasted a fraction of a second before the blackness claimed him.
The Darkmages head rolled from its perch at Nevin’s shoulders and bumped into a root and span settling into a position where it stared back at its former home. A huge shape could be seen standing with one foot atop Nevin’s corpse. It was easily eight or nine feet tall encased in a massive set of plate armour, it held two massive great swords in each hand as if they weighed nothing more than a feather. He threw his head back and cried out in triumph, the mighty warrior cry echoing around the eerie wood. The last of the Darkmages lay dead at his feet, the death of his village and countless others had been avenged, at last their souls could rest in peace.
A few hundred metres away he could see the edge of the forest, as he walked forwards he noticed that the world on the other side of the woods was not his own, he looked around as he left the tree line drinking in his surroundings taking in its ravaged beauty, ahead somewhere he heard the sounds of battle. He also head the land as it cried for release and to a golden age it had once experienced, images flashed across his mind of a world of peace and beauty turning into bloody images of war and slaughter. He knew now his purpose here; fate had led him to this new world so he could restore this place to its former glory.
Up above the indistinct forms of the Gods of this new world moved in silence and watched this new arrival with interest. He was a wildcard in their plans for this world and could tip the odds in their favour or against them….
*To truly understand a story we need to understand its beginnings, how this creation and its quest for vengeance were formed*
