:yltype: I just recieved my Registration confirmation e-mail, and was asked to choose my alignment. 2 ?s. 1) Is there some particular place to do that? 2) Is Dark necessarily evil and Light good, or is it more of an ambiance kind of choice. I for instance would like to be on the side of good (if there is any such clear cut kind of thing in DnL or if your play determines your reputation) but wouldn't mind being so in a more dark and exotic fashion (think Drzzt or Elric etc.). All I know is that the devs seem to say is that there is Light magic and Dark magic.

Antaean, as our gm I sure hope you have a better understanding of all this dark and light stuff than me. lol. But I think you are on the right track. There has been no real definition of dark and light other than the two moons - one being dark one being light - and perhaps the magic associated with each of them. I wonder if the choice of spells will differ ?? Could be interesting.
There is no light necromancers or dark paladins. I'm not sure if it's said on some post, developer chat or what but some professionals, spells, weapons, armors, items, races, etc.. are only for another of alignments.
Email saying "choose your alignment!" is only motto of this game, check the page title "Dark And Light : Choose your alignment! :: The Largest MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game)" so you don't need to choose your alignment yet, nor you can't yet (officially).

You just can't have Light Darkelfs its a contridiction (Light Dark??) anyway, I hope all of our ideas and arguments get through to the devs
Well I think you can choose to be part of light et use dark magic no?

I've read all the messages here and i want to make one thing clear: (Quote) Right, Dark doesn't essentially mean "evil" and light doesn't essentially mean "good". However, the Dark side and the Light side are rivals. Therefore, they are at war with each other and in essence despise each other (think opposite/warring Kingdoms). Hence, the Light kill Dark, Dark kill Light.
But i really want to know what the idea's and prejustices are of the 2 groups, does anyone know this?
And finally, YES a necromancer can cooperate with the forces of Light (good), and a Paladin can become 'corrupted' and use the forces of Evil...

Beta testing starts in about 2 months, so expect the game in stores (or download?) shortly before X-mas

you arent gonna play anything if you keep whining like that :P why not just let them developers finish whatever they have to finish, and THEN play? :)

I believe that the developers didn't want to place a stigma on either side ( Dark or Light ) by saying it was evil. I think that the general concensus is that most people tend to want to be the " hero " and fight for the " good guys ". So that would lead to a possible flooding of one side of the scales and the game would be no fun because one would constantly be kicking the crap out of the other. I think they were just trying to avoid this and see where the people would align themselves initially under this pretense introduced early on. It could very well change later, there is a lot that is left out in the lore and history department of this game. Perhaps they are kicked back reading these forums and deciding what ideas are popular enough to try implementing into the game. I don't really have any clue. It appears we will all have to simply speculate here until we are given more information from the creators. Don't ya just feel like your trapped in a pit in the town square waiting for people to accidentally drop something edible down through the grate or perhaps bring you the table scraps from dinner as a gesture of pity?... I sure hope someone spills some ale... Barkee... umm... Get me out of here!!!

Just to clear a few misconsceptions dark and light is not good and evil, they're just two different dogmas, or doctrines.
eg. it may turn out that the light stance is a more world domination-dictator type stance

Gronomist,
Everyone has been nice on this thread and tried to discuss the philosophy of 'Dark and Light'... except you. I was just venting my anticipation! I started this thread a long time ago and have enjoyed the reflections it has elicited, until now. I'll stop 'whining if you be patient and a little nicer.

My character sees the dark as comforting, sheltering, and overall 'good', while the light is harsh, ugly, and quite 'evil'.
Light, Dark, Black, White -- they are things, not moral matters like Good and Evil.

i agree with many of you that light, dark, good, or evil are just things. But it would be cool if we could get a classic battle between good and evil going.

I'm sure that's what the alignment thing will turn into on some parts. I mean, wouldn't it throw the balance off if there weren't counteracting forces such as that? I'm sure once all of the less mature RPers discover DnL that they will come here thinking 'light=good, dark=bad' and go appropriately. Lets just remember that this is not true and try and keep it from happening. I think the dark vs. light concept will be interesting and I wonder what role the neutrals will play in this. I for once am quite unsure of what alignment I would like to be as of yet ^^;

doesnt the alignment thing basically mean what magic you practise you could be good alingment but dark , so you get dark magic,... wasnt it that

Both magics will be equal in power no matter what side you're on. If they aren't then the game would be unbalanced.
