Lutins?

I have no idea what a Lutin is, so I googled it. Unfortunately nearly all of the sites were in French (duh!), but I get the impression it's kind of like a Scottish Bruney, ie a house fairy. If the illustrations on the French pages are anything to go by, they look like short elves, or santa's elves, or pointy eared gnomes.
Does anyone have more information on them as the devs envision them?
