Please tell me the game doesn't have character aging!

ant, the lose movement and gain wisdom is a great idea. Some of us aren't barbarians who bash creatures with sticks, but we are more sophisticated, and melt them with fireballs. So for you ant, aging would suck, but for a magic user like me..... LET THE AGING BEGIN!!!!!. however, i think that fighting is good for one thing, stepping on ants like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rigmar steps on and crushes antaean under his wise and experienced foot* SPLAT

I agree with alot of people before me, aging would (if it did increase wisdom) be quite a good thing, not only for using magic but a number of things. However I also agree that if after u gain all that wisdom, and are respected for being so good. Then u die.. It would have been practically pointless. So i think that if there is an aging system, then whatever race, u dont die (which would be stupid but hey, either that or u die) Or when u do die you still have all that knowledge and wisdom etc on a new character of your choice who then becomes even better than the previous.

I agree on having an agee and stuff but if it has a big physical change on the characters then I would like it not to be included.

No aging, when you choose an age in the beginning that should be permanent for the practical reasons. As said above it cant be good for certain classes to gain wisdon and lose your fysical abilities.
And i dont want to die permantly of old age. Then it would be like "Game over dude, insert quarter"

I'd like to see my 78 year old archer go out and hunt trolls :P

I agree with grovsalt and everyone else who thinks aging is BAD!

I would like to have the occasional birthday...

What about children? I guess not aging would rule out the possibility of having an young npc crawl/walk around in circles in whereever it is the person lives?

I find the idea of Character aging VERY interesting. But, I feel there should be a limited implementation such as voluntary, but the benefits of volunteering to 'age' would be something along the lines of special social status, etc.

After playing most every mmorpg out there, I am certainly ready for a new 'twist'

They could include an age and not allow it to effect the player negatively, kinda like in the Fallout games. This would could allow players to age and have birthdays n such without any bad repercussions.

And have age restrictions on certain player models. (Like an old human wizard could have and age limit of 40 and up, and Elfs could start much higher)

And to solve people getting too old (where it might be unrealistic, like humans being 250) make it happen every real year, or 2 or 3 times every real year. And hell, give special things on birthday’s similar to leveling up.

Who knows?

Aging would be bad. I thinkn some of you are forgetting something... if they age, they DIE! nobody wants their high lvl char to just die... well, maybe some people do. It would really discourage me from playing if my char that i work to get really strong just kicks the bucket after a month or 2.

but it would be funny having an uber-character rolling around in a wheelchair

Isn't all the players created by the god or the immortals? So then everyone thats a pc is vurtually 'immortal' except if we are killed by monsters.

I hope they don't do character aging. I don't like the idea much myself. I understand it adds a sense of realism to the game, but its a fantasy roleplaying game anyway. I can age in RL. We go to games like this at least in part as an escape from real life. Just my opinion though. ;)

I agree in some of you, aging (and resulting in dying) is a bad idea, but we must
still have the option to choose the age, like in some games, but your age only affect your appearance, that would be nice, for RP reasons...

Dont worry, they most likely wont

About the NPC child running around a PC dwelling, maybe we could have a heritage system, your character may die of old age but hten you take control of your 'son' and he inherits everything you had... about stats and skills... maybe we could train the child or he'd just inherit it with the rest :P

The idea of perma death, be it age or combat, seems to me more like a account deletion or something like that.

not sure wether aging should increase-decrease stats, but I wouldn't mind my character growing a bit, and getting patches of grey in his hair. That will only add to the roleplaying...

The Sims 2 have that idea in mind.

I could see that happening in an RPG, but it would prove to be quite agravating to start from scratch every so often.

Maybe not exactly on the topic of ageing.. but
I thought it would be cool that if after playing your character for a certain amount of ingame time you could have the ability to sacrifice the character and get a new character but with higher base stats and other things, so that when it got to the same stage as the first it would be stronger. You would only want this happening after quite a while so people arent just making and sacrificing characters left right and centre. On the point of making the new characters stronger, maybe only let some really high level skills/spells available to the these "2nd generation" characters.
Just my 2c.. but with exchange rates its only about 1.1c

Is everyone here oblivious to the fact that this thread is nearly 5 months old? ;)

On topic (for what it's worth) I doubt there will be little, if any, physical or statistical signs of aging in-game. Think about it logically and you'll probably come to the same conclusion; it's stupid.

Wow, 5 months eh? I need to pay attention more...

I come here to escape from real life...I don't want to age here as I am doing quite well on that subject in RL.

Having thought about it some more, I really really doubt they would do this, if only for the programming difficulty involved. Think about it. They'd have to have different character models for all the races that kick in based on age, if you are talking about aging their appearance, and in the case of stats they'd have to have some sort of formula for some going up and some going down etc. That would all have to be controlled by an in game complex engine that would redetermine the variables everytime you logged based on the time in game for your toon.

Not worth it from a programming point of view IMO.

5 months old? Wow. Well, maybe someone new has something different to say.

Since when are new ideas too old to discuss and on that note, since when are new ideas Stupid?

..tis close-minded thinking which is ignorant.

It isn't such a stupid idea I think, but it doesn't consider with the historry of the game ;)
But when then I think its the best when only the Body dies an is reborn with its old skills................................ ;)

But what is time ? Do whe create the time whe now and so whe have to aging ?
*rolleyes*

I was stating my opinion on the topic of aging within MMORPGs, not expressing opinion on other people's views, THAT would be stupid. (sorry for the pun) ;)

i dont like the idea of aging.. but i do think that we should be able to choose our age at the start. kind of like AD&D

WOULD BE COOL if u could train ur son or daughter and when they are 18 y old they become characters controlled by u

aging=death for most of the races.

I think it would be better just to the the apperence chang the the adding of more stats. Like if a person could could lift up a car it would give the person the appropriate look with muscle. a very wise Wizard will appear to get older but never enough to kill him

Due to the PCs being immortal as such. i think aging SHOULD be implemented. Here's my basic thoughts though.

1)There are NO negative bonuses for being older.
2) NO advantage stat wise over younger characters, maybe skills are more 'honed' but NO number bonuses PLEASE.
3)Maybe to perform certain actions(like ruling a kingdom) you would need a certain age requirement. This is to ensure that the more famous and worthy characters rule, not some little upstart. Good or bad, ideas?

That's my thoughts. Your age should make you a more important person in society, and better respected, but not offer any disadvantages. i don't really like the older characters having stat bonuses(or skill bonuses for that matter) that aren't available to the newer PCs.

Oh, not sure how aging could be shown visually, but it works in text based games..eg. Wolfenburg or Legends of Terris...

Anything works in text-based games. ;) BTW, Korin, try not to doublepost, just use the Edit button if you want to add something.

Anyways, I feel that age is something that comes out naturally as you play. Older players are going to know much more than younger players, and therefor would be better rulers naturally. No one with any sense would elect a new player as a ruler over a larger body of older players. Age comes with experience.

With physical age you run into 3 main issues. 1. How to do it so it appears right. 2. Not everyone will want their character to age. And 3. Different races age at different rates, take Elves, for instance.

Gaidin
06-30-2003, 03:56 AM
well in some instances.... elves are portrayed as immortal.. such as in LotR.... btu aging does mean death to most races... im not too sure about the braves seeing how they are the childrem of men and demigods.... so that means your character can only be played for a period of time before they will die.. so thats why i say you should be able to EDIT your characters age... so you could stay the same age as long as you want or you can givve yourself 10 years if you want. how about that Medic?

Roin
06-30-2003, 04:03 AM
I dont think that would work well at all Gaidin... especially in a RP environment... one day somebody is a good 23, strong and active. The next day they are 63 and limping around with a cane.... i dunno :P
